LoL, the season is almost over and there hasn't been a single post in this thread. Sad.

It's astonishing what a dramatic decline in quality the writing has taken.

Deb and Dexter in the promo for next week.... Wayyyy too close! Looked like they were gonna kiss. Ewww! I hope the show doesn't go there.

I have the season downloaded but I haven't gotten the chance to watch yet. Is it pretty bad? I'm still pissed at last season's finale. Where basically everything in season 5 was a waste because of the stupid finale.

I have been watching it and liking it a lot.

ETA: I don't think he has done enough killing this season though!

It isn't terrible. It just isn't as well-written as it used to be.

The show has become too sanitized. Dexter used to be the most edgy and unique show on TV, but in an effort to make it more appealing to the mainstream viewing audience, the writers have started throwing in silly shit like this to make Dexter a more humorous, less "serious" character.

The show isn't a sitcom. It shouldn't be written as one.

The formula is getting stale. The writers need to take some real risks for once. Really shock people by doing something unexpected. Maybe let Dexter be caught by someone. Allow something of actual consequence to happen.

Another problem is the voice-overs. They're tedious and overused. Dexter no longer waxes poetic in his vocal narrations at the beginning and end of each episode -- he just states the obvious over and over and over. It's like "Dexter For Dummies." The exposition might be worth it if we weren't able to see the twists coming from a mile away, but when things are so obvious, there's no need for the constant voice-overs explaining to us what we already know. "Gellar's dead. Travis has been working alone the whole time." Gee, really? You think showing us his frozen body in the freezer didn't make that clear for us in the last episode?

Another problem is that Dexter is kind of an idiot now. In the past, he used to dot all his I's and cross all his T's to make sure he never got caught, but now he's very casual about everything. He's sloppy. He takes risks that aren't work taking. He lets people go who know too much. He doesn't disguise himself or his voice when he probably should. It's lazy writing. There are about a million different things he's done that could easily be traced back to him this season alone, yet he still hasn't been caught, which I find hard to believe. He's been way too sloppy. I'm fine with suspending my disbelief for a show like Once Upon A Time, but not Dexter.

I still love it, but I agree with your assessment Kenny. I wasn't aware of what it was that was annoying me about this season, but I think you just nailed it all.

Yeah, I agree with your assessment too. If this was the second or third season, it would seem fresh, but now it seems stale. If I took a drink everytime the phrase "dark passenger" was uttered, I'd need a new liver by now. I think another 2 seasons is totally not called for - we all know how it ends anyway - Deb finds out and either kills Dexter or he kills himself.

I've liked parts of this current season, but it's probably one of my least favorite they've done..But still better than what most shows can strive for...I want some big shockers in these last two episodes..

I have to admit, this last episode was cringeworthy. The show is still great at times and I've enjoyed most of this season, but everything is just ridiculous in terms of set-up and execution. Dexter DOES seem sloppy now. And I love how everything just falls into place so conveniently. I don't know. I just can't stretch my imagination much further. I think this season is overall, weak. I didn't want to admit it, but I finally have to. LOL.

I've enjoyed parts of this season too, but it did start out pretty slow. I can't count how many times I've snapped at the TV with how sloppy Dexter has been. It's VERY hard to believe that he's gotten away with half of what he has this season without getting caught. The promos and the concept for this season looked really promising, but it just didn't live up.

I'm just ready for Deb to find out Dexter's secret..The show really needs a big reveal like that to jumpstart next season..Or another big death..Batista maybe?

I've read rumors someone major dies, but I honestly have no clue who.

I'm over Batista, Quinn and LaGuerta. They're all written horribly. LaGuerta was starting to mature and change around Season 4 but that all went to shit last season and while I think she's better written this year, she's nothing but a dayplayer at this point. I was over Quinn when he first joined and was really upset that he was never killed off. I also don't buy him being SO distraught over Debra. I never liked them as a couple at all. We never see any of Batista's angst (anymore, they did use his wife and kid early early on). It's all off-screen with mentions here and there and some bent up anger being unleashed. Why can't we see him not being able to connect with his daughter? Why was all of the LaGuerta/Batista mess handled mostly off-screen? If the writers aren't invested in any of them, why should we be?

And I mean, seriously, Dexter brought up the woman on the anchor, in plain daylight and just left her there while standing there talking to his dead father. Seriously?

And I'm just tired of how everything falls into place, and like this last episode, we hear Dexter talking about Travis catching that woman and her hiding out on the boat, and of course the exact scenario happens. I don't know, I think this season has been sloppy as hell and I'm very disappointed. I liked Brother Sam and initial Travis/Gellar but it feels so stretched at this point. I am enjoying the deeper looks at both Dexter and Debra, but this season just isn't really on par. Don't we have a new showrunner? That could explain the mess.

I miss the days of Dexter so desperately trying to hide who he is (he is SO much more brazen now, I'm shocked), covering his tracks, coming up with clever excuses. I was kinda over Rita and Dexter (she was written like a complete bitch starting in Season 3, and I think they wrote her horribly in Season 4 because they knew all along she would die so they wanted the backlash to be lessened. I would have pitched a much bigger fit if they offed her in Seasons 1 or 2) but it made the stakes higher. We cared about him lying to her and hiding it from Debra. Debra should be questioning Dexter more, all over his shit like Rita was. It would at least up the stakes. And let's face it, he's had the same storyline every season. Does that make sense? I'm kinda rambling ... lol. I also don't think they should have dumped the kids onto the grandparents. Him keeping them would have been a lot more interesting. Have they even been on this season? Or mentioned?

I couldn't believe that. He could've been caught so easily!

We already know there are cameras by the docks because Dexter watched the security footage to see if Travis took the boat hours earlier, so it was a huge risk for him to go on that same boat and try to kill (who he thought was) Travis in front of the security cameras, bring up the woman's body from the anchor, call in an anonymous tip without disguising his voice (you think Miami Metro wouldn't have known it was him?!), get his DNA all over the boat, etc. -- and he did it all in broad daylight for anyone to see. Yet he still wasn't caught, even after all that. It's sloppy, lazy writing, plain and simple.

It's sad to see what LaGuerta has been reduced to. Even Quinn has more of a story than she does. The season is almost over and she's had, what... four, maybe five minutes of screentime so far?

Are we really getting a closer look at Deb though? Her therapy sessions have been more about Dexter than herself, which I find totally unbelievable and really tedious. Nobody seeks professional help to talk about other peoples issues more than their own.

That's what I meant when I said the formula is stale. Every season it's the same thing. A new big bad is introduced, Dexter stalks them, they play a cat-and-mouse game for five or six episodes and then Dexter finally kills them in the finale. It's fun for what it is, but can't they do something different for once?

The side stories are different but none of them matter because they're boring as hell. Does anyone really care about Quinn and his parade of strippers? Angel and his sister? Sgt. Matthews? The only fringe character I'm interested in is the creepy intern and that's because I think he's on to Dexter. Why else would he have the hand from the Ice Truck Killer case in his apartment and care so much what Dexter thinks of his serial killer game?

Like I posted above, the writers need to take some real risks for once. Really shake things up. Do something unexpected. Let Dexter be caught. Allow something of actual consequence to happen to break up the monotony.

I do like this season, but Dexter has been sloppy, not quite sure why. Giving Travis a cell with his number? You would think he would have learned after Rita's death. Last week's twist definately had me saying holy shit, though!! Definately has potential!

Really?

I guessed the twist weeks ago. I thought it was terribly predictable.

I never thought of it and I'm usually pretty savvy when it comes to twists and such. What made you think that? The fact that Dexter never really saw Gellar, or just suddenly showed up in places? I guess I was too busy being annoyed at this season to notice those until after the reveal.

My husband and I are usually pretty good at guessing that kind of stuff, but we were totally shocked by it...I even went back and watched the previous episodes over and then saw that Dexter never actually saw Geller. Travis would say he was there but Dexter was always preoccupied and was never looking in Geller's direction.

I figured out the twist weeks ago too. The one thing that made me think that Geller wasn't really there was when Travis was in a restaurant with him and the waitress only talked to Travis and asked him if he wanted anything. She didn't acknowledge anyone else.
